Lobsters to Be Supersized by Climate Change?

This is a very interesting article about lobsters growing bigger due to rising CO2 levels. Not only are the lobsters growing, but crabs and shrimp as well. This could potentially be good news to those seafood lovers but, bad news to those who prey on lobsters, crab or shrimp. Those predators are negatively affected by the rising CO2 levels. Coral Reef is also being negatively impacted by these rising levels.

This article stood out to me because i think its neat how a gas can kill one species and grow another. I think the growth is good and bad. Good, because i personally love seafood and some bigger shrimp wouln't hurt. Bad, because the whole food chain in the ocean could be thrown off. Lobster, crab and shrimp will be able to prey on more and bigger species then usual. Coral reef is pretty much essential to oceanic life. Habitats and food for some species is gone. More species being hunted and coral reef being depleted will virtually change the oceanic food chain, in a bad way. I think the information in this article is very inportant because life outside of the ocean will also be affected.

  1. This is interesting. I think that the coral reef problem is something to be concerned about. They are subject to a lot of environmental harm through bleaching especially, now this. The biodiversity that coral reefs provide is astounding and needs to be monitored and hopefully controlled. These rising CO2 levels effect all plants and animals and they have virtually no way of protecting themselves from it.

  2. Its nice how the seafood is getting bigger but its not nice how the CO2 levels are rising that damage and disrupts the food chain.

  3. It is interesting that different species living in the same area can be affected differently. But it seems strange that Co2 could hurt one but not the other. As it has been said, very interesting.

  4. Thats actually kind of cool how they get bigger. But i agree that it could throw the food chain a curveball. It could leave less food for the other marine organisms, as larger lobsters need larger quantities of food. For the typical food lover bigger lobsters means more food to go around. This could be helpful in the fishing industry, now that less lobsters could be required to meet quota because they are larger. This could eliminate the tragedy of the commons issue with overharvesting. At least with lobster anyway

  5. Woudln't this growth eventually cause the extinction/lower number? Quantity>quality in my opinion regarding food, and if these crawfish are all growing so large, then they're taking up more resources, but if there isn't an abundance of resources, then they kill themselves, so in the far future, will we end up with a few number of extremly large lobster?

  6. This is fascinating! Not only would the food chain be messed up but also the natural habitats. How much bigger are the growing? and are they going to continue growing? Are the animals themselves being hurt in anyway? Are there other reasons other than CO2 levels that these organisms are growing?

  7. This is extremely interesting. It's odd that a gas that harms many organisms increases the size of others. This is such a different idea to most organisms that i almost can't believe it. It seems that CO2 is a benefit for some creatures, other than plants, and that not all of our actions are bad to all other things.
