the explosion of jellyfish

http://www.heatisonline.org/contentserver/objecthandlers/index.cfm?ID=4003&Method=Full&PageCall=&Title=Jellyfish+Flourish+As+Water+Warms&Cache=False

This is really interesting about how the jellyfish population is increasing dramatically due to global warming. They are killing populations of fish near the Rode Island coast, along with oysters. They are increasing because they favor the warming weather while other fish and invertebrates do not. This is causing problems in the fishing industries.

  1. This is really interesting. Not only is it causing the other fish to move up North but is causing other predators to flourish hurting our economy. Only another reason why we need to start to address this major problem right away and can no longer put it off.

  2. Since the jellyfish destroy the eggs and not the adult fish themselves, it seems like this issue will last long into the future unless we put a stop to it now.

  3. I find overfishing an interesting topic because it perfectly demonstrates the effects of human greed not only on the environment, but on the market as well. The two are often seen as mutually exclusive of each other, or even opposing, however this scenario illustrates their linkage, giving all sides of the argument an impetus for change.

  4. In addition to the fish eggs issue, I forsee this problem lasting far into the future because the waters are continuing to warm, due to global climate change. If we do not act to decrease the overall temperature of the water soon, it will be too late.

  5. This article is similar to that of the one that talks about CO2 levels rising making the lobsters, crabs, shrimps, etc. grow bigger therefore disrupting the ecosystem. We should start to do something or we will have too much jellyfish and humongous lobsters, crabs, and etc.!!!!

  7. These jellyfish should be the poster child of everything wrong in the oceans. First, the problem of invasive species. The jelly combs originated in South America. They were carried into the bay in the hulls and ballast water of tankers. Second, the problem of climate change. The jelly comb lived in the Southern Hemisphere because it needed warmer waters. Now, the Narragansett Bay is as warm as Argentina! Third, the problem of overfishing. The jellies were only able to invade because the native populations were already decimated.

Our ocean has so many problems, I wonder if we haven’t permanently destroyed it.

  8. This is crazy at how fast these jellyfish are reproducing, and that it is caused by an increase in temperature. I think that because these jellyfish are causing a decrease in the fish population some specific research should be done to see if there is a way to maintain their growth.
